1 I am the true grapevine, and my Father is the gardener. 2 He cuts off every branch of mine that doesn’t produce fruit, and he prunes the branches that do bear fruit so they will produce even more. 3 You have already been pruned and purified by the message I have given you. 4 Remain in me, and I will remain in you. For a branch cannot produce fruit if it is severed from the vine, and you cannot be fruitful unless you remain in me.
5 “Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing. 6 Anyone who does not remain in me is thrown away like a useless branch and withers. Such branches are gathered into a pile to be burned. 7 But if you remain in me and my words remain in you, you may ask for anything you want, and it will be granted! 8 When you produce much fruit, you are my true disciples. This brings great glory to my Father. John 15:1-8
This is a tough passage of scripture, but one we cannot afford to ignore. Here’s two things we need to catch.
1. God Cuts Off Those That Do Not Bare Fruit
When a gardener encounters a tree or vine that has a dead branch they cut if off. Why? Because it can no longer be revived and will just damage the remaining portion of the plant. God does the same thing. We each have the choice to follow God or go our own way. The warning in this passage is if we choice to not follow God he will cut us off. Turn back to God, let him revive you.
2. God Prunes Those That Do Bare Fruit
Pruning is an important practice for a gardener to ensure their crop is going to it’s fullest potential. In our life God will prune everyone that follows him. Not because he doesn’t like us or because he wants to cause us pain. He prunes us because there is something he wants to bring out. He prunes the bad in our life (the sin) so that the good (the fruits of the spirit) can grow. When God prunes us it’s because he loves us, much like a parent disciplines their child because they love them.
Remain in God and he will remain in you. Pray through this passage, what is God telling you?
