How to Grow Your Prayer Life: 10 Practical Ways to Connect with God
Let’s be honest, prayer sounds simple… But when it’s time to actually put it into practice it’s a whole different story.
You sit down to pray and suddenly remember 37 things you forgot to do. Or you start talking to God and feel like you’re just… talking to the ceiling. And after a few awkward minutes, you’re left wondering, “Am I even doing this right?”
I get it. As a pastor, I’ve heard this question more times than I can count: “How do I actually pray?”
And this is an important questions because prayer isn’t about getting what we want, it’s about growing closer to the One who made us. It’s how we connect with God. And if you want to grow your faith, there’s no way around it, you’ve got to spend time with Him.
So in this post, I want to give you 10 practical ways to grow your prayer life. Not tips for perfect people, but real ways to pray, even when you feel distracted, overwhelmed, or just unsure where to start.
Let’s dive in.
How To Pray To God
God isn’t looking for perfect prayers, He’s just looking for you. So here are 10 ways you can show up and grow your prayer life, one step at a time.
1. Just Pray
This might sound obvious, but the most important thing you can do is… just pray. Don’t wait until you have the perfect words. Don’t wait until you feel holy enough. Just start.
It won’t be perfect. It might feel awkward or even a little forced at first. That’s okay. Prayer is like a muscle, it grows with use. And the only way to build the habit is to begin, even if it’s messy.
Start with a few minutes a day. Talk to God in the car, while you’re walking, or before you fall asleep. Create space in your schedule, not because you have to, but because this is where real connection happens.
So don’t overthink it. Just show up. God’s not waiting for a flawless performance, He just wants to meet with you.
2. Be Honest
One of the most powerful things you can do in prayer is be honest. You don’t need to filter your words or pretend everything’s okay. God already knows what’s going on in your life—so why not just tell Him?
Look at the Psalms. David didn’t hold back, he vented his anger, poured out his sadness, confessed his doubts. That’s what real prayer looks like. God doesn’t want a polished version of you, He wants you.
So if you’re tired, say that. If you’re mad, say that. If you feel distant or confused or afraid, bring that too. Honesty is the doorway to intimacy with God. You can’t heal from what you hide. But when you’re real with God, you’ll find He meets you right there.
3. Pray Simply
You don’t need to sound spiritual to talk to God. There’s no secret language, no magic formula. Just talk to Him like you would a close friend.
One of the biggest barriers people face in prayer is the pressure to say the right thing. But God isn’t grading your vocabulary—He’s listening to your heart. Jesus even warned against overcomplicating our prayers. He said, “Don’t babble like the pagans.” Just keep it simple.
So stop worrying about getting the words right. Say what’s on your mind. Speak from the heart. It’s not about impressing God, it’s about connecting with Him.
4. Pray Consistently
If you want to grow in prayer, consistency matters more than intensity. You don’t need hour-long prayer sessions, just regular moments where you turn your attention toward God.
Paul says to “pray without ceasing,” and that doesn’t mean nonstop talking. It means prayer becomes a natural rhythm of your life. Like breathing.
Start small. Set a reminder on your phone. Pray during your commute or while you’re getting ready in the morning. It doesn’t have to be fancy, it just needs to be regular.
Over time, consistency builds connection. And the more you make prayer a habit, the more natural it becomes.
5. Be Active
Prayer doesn’t have to happen in a quiet room with your eyes closed. For some people, that’s actually the hardest way to focus. So try praying while you move.
Go for a walk. Sit outside. Hike a trail. Take in the world around you and let it guide your conversation with God. Sometimes being active helps us slow down on the inside.
You don’t have to sit still to connect with God. Jesus prayed on mountaintops, in gardens, and on the go. So if stillness feels hard, get moving. Talk to God while you walk, run, or even while doing dishes.
Make prayer fit your life. Don’t box it in.
6. Pray a Psalm
Sometimes we don’t know what to say—and that’s okay. That’s where the Psalms can help. They give us words when we’re out of words.
There’s a Psalm for just about everything—joy, grief, fear, doubt, praise. And praying through them can guide you when your own prayers feel stuck. You’re not just reading Scripture, you’re turning it into a conversation with God.
Try this: open to a Psalm that reflects what you’re feeling, and read it slowly. Pause and respond in your own words. Let the Psalm lead you, but don’t be afraid to make it personal.
When you don’t know how to pray, borrow the prayers of Scripture.
7. Record Your Prayers
Writing down your prayers can make them more intentional and more memorable. It slows you down and helps you think through what you’re really trying to say.
But it’s not just helpful in the moment. Over time, it becomes a record of your journey with God. You can look back and see how He’s moved, how you’ve grown, and how prayers you forgot you prayed have been answered.
You don’t have to write every day. Even once or twice a week can build something meaningful. Use a journal, your phone, whatever works. Just give yourself space to reflect and write. Because sometimes, the encouragement you need today is buried in a prayer you wrote months ago.
8. Be Vulnerable
God doesn’t just want your cleaned-up version—He wants the real you. The broken parts. The questions. The sin. The stuff you try to hide from everyone else.
Here’s the truth: vulnerability is where healing begins. When we try to hide our struggles, they fester. But when we bring them into the light, into conversation with God, something changes.
God already knows what’s going on in your life. He’s not shocked or disappointed by your mess. He just wants you to bring it to Him.
So be vulnerable. Pray about the things you’re ashamed of. Let Him into the dark corners. That’s where grace does its best work.
9. Expand Your Focus
It’s easy for our prayers to revolve around us, our needs, our worries, our plans. And while it’s good to bring those things to God, we’re also called to pray for others.
Think about the people in your life, your friends, family, coworkers. Who needs encouragement? Who’s going through something heavy? Write their names down. Set a daily reminder. Make it a rhythm to lift them up in prayer.
Something powerful happens when we shift our focus outward. It not only helps others, it deepens our own faith. Prayer isn’t just a lifeline for you. It’s a way to bring hope and healing to the people around you.
10. Surrender Your Plans
One of the hardest parts of prayer is letting go of control. We want God to answer our way, in our time. But real prayer isn’t about bending God to our will, it’s about aligning our heart to His.
Even Jesus, in the Garden of Gethsemane, prayed honestly about what He wanted… but then He said, “Not my will, but yours be done.” That’s what surrender looks like.
It’s okay to ask God for what’s on your heart. He wants that. But don’t stop there. End with surrender. Trust that His plan is better, even when it’s not the one you had in mind.
Because real peace doesn’t come from getting what you want, it comes from trusting the One who knows what you need.
These are 10 real, practical ways to grow your prayer life. You don’t need to do all of them today. Just pick one or two that stood out. Which one hit you the hardest? Which one do you need to start with this week? Drop it in the comments, I’d love to hear what you’re leaning into.
